  Under Pressure

 

Is it normal that a child in a classroom, sitting quietly staring at a booklet laying on his or her desk, should suddenly burst into tears?  Is it proper that the adults directing that child's day should put such pressure on the child that headaches, stomach aches, irritability, and even vomiting are the result?  In many classrooms across the country, this is normal on test days.  Some children in our Readington schools reported just this type of behavior when they spoke with their parents after test days. Ask your own child if anyone cried in their classroom on test days.

As adults, we do need to shoulder a lot of stress and a lot of pressure in our work and our home life. Is it the best idea to put children as young as six and seven in this same vise?  Where does the pressure end and the child abuse start?  There are anecdotal accounts of children stressed out over testing all over the web.  One account, widely circulated, asserts that test-maker Harcourt insists that their tests be returned to them even if they have vomit on them.  Here are three more balanced and substantiated accounts you might want to read:
