  Annual Self-Evaluation for NJ Boards

[ During the November 23 board meeting, Board member Bill Weber corrected the original assertion published here that our board does not conduct a self-evaluation. We appreciate the corrected information.

However, this is a good news-bad news circumstance. The good news is that the board is self-evaluating, the bad news is that the information is not made public, and that the process remains hidden. As the quote from NJSBA below points out, it is important to signal to the community that you practice what you preach. Releasing what are public documents anyway--warts and all--would be a big step forward on the road to better community relations.]

The NJ School Boards Association, among others, recommends that Boards of Education conduct annual Self-Evaluations in order to improve their performance.  As the NJSBA puts it:

"You are sending a clear signal to the community and staff about the importance of evaluation -- you are practicing what you preach."

There are many districts who mention the importance of this exercise right on their website, including the Boards in Randolph, Chester, Hasbrouck-Heights, Verona, North Warren Regional, Kinnelon, Ewing, and South Orange-Maplewood, among others. In fact, South Orange-Maplewood, a district that is frequently mentioned in the press in positive terms, publishes their evaluation (Adobe PDF file) for the public to see. It is worth reading to understand how a responsible Board functions.
