Looking for more in-depth coverage of the standardized testing debate?  Here are some books and websites for further study:

Books and articles:

  • An excellent and scholarly book on the testing culture is Standardized Minds by Peter Sacks (ISBN number 0-7382-0433-1).  It is eye-opening and thorough.
  • Alfie Kohn has written many excellent books on American classrooms. His The Schools Our Children Deserve (ISBN number 0-618-08345-6) covers standardized testing and much more in a very readable format, and you might try The Case Against Standardized Testing too, (ISBN 0-325-00325-4).
  • The book by Linda M. McNeil, Contradictions of School Reform (ISBN number 0-415-92074-4) covers testing and its effects on classrooms.  It is widely read.
  • An article called Change and Continuity in Student Achievement from grades 3 to 5: A policy Dilemma has been cited elsewhere here. See page 5 of the document.
